ABOUT THE REGIONAL REFEREE POSITION AND COURSE:
Regional Referee is the initial level of training required for all Referees in Region 254. Regional Referees manage soccer matches played between teams of youth players in the age groups from 10U to 12U (14U and Above games require additional referee training). Region 254 does not recognize 8U Referee, Assistant Referee, or any other AYSO referee training below that of Regional Referee.

Regional Referees manage soccer matches played between teams of youth players in age groups 10U and 12U (14U and Above games require additional referee training). The referee is expected to cooperate with coaches and other officials to develop a positive self-image in the players and to provide a good role model for all AYSO participants. Training will cover the AYSO National Rules and Regulations, the FIFA Laws of the Game and the training curriculum as specified in the AYSO National Referee Program.

Youth Referees (under age 18) may attend this course, and are encouraged to do so.

PLEASE REMEMBER:
ALL teams in the 10U and Above Age Divisions are REQUIRED to earn volunteer points from refereeing in order to qualify for playoffs and postseason play. Teams are expected to provide at least one Referee per team, and parents are encouraged to enroll in this course even if they do not currently know what team(s) their child will play on.

Training

Referees are as critical to soccer as players and coaches. In AYSO, the game can’t be played if there aren’t enough referees.  AYSO’s referee training is considered some of the best in the U.S. and includes both in-person courses in your community and online opportunities. Soccer knowledge is a plus, but is certainly not required. The AYSO referee training will give you all you need to know to have a terrific experience on the field.

Training

For those interested in joining the referee ranks, the required training consists of  a full-day course that is designed for individuals refereeing in the U10 division or higher. Both of these course offerings are held at many convenient opportunities during the year. No advance preparation is required and all course materials will be provided on the day of the class.

Completion of the Basic Referee course certifies that you may referee as a Center Referee at any AYSO soccer match up through U12. For those interested in officiating at the U14 and above level, you will need to upgrade your badge to either the Intermediate or Advanced Level. We encourage you to take one of the Intermediate or Advanced Referee courses that are typically offered within Area 10V. Periodically check the Region 254 website for details of these course offerings or ask anyone on the Referee Staff for information about attending one of these advanced classes.

Cost

In AYSO there is no out-of-pocket cost in becoming a referee. We only ask that you invest your time to help promote a FUN, FAIR and SAFE environment for our kids.
Once you have completed  the Basic Referee class and officiated 3 games, you will be provided a complete uniform and accessory kit needed in order to get you off to the right start in your first match. Once again, thank you to all who volunteer to be a referee. We appreciate your commitment to our kids and the AYSO program and we will do whatever we can to make this experience as enjoyable and as rewarding as possible. See you on the field!

Referees are encouraged to check the web site frequently for updates, announcements and other information.
