Burbank AYSO Region 254

Coach Training Matrix

All coaches will need to receive training through in-person training ONLY (not online) and will need to comply with the following requirements:

6U / 8U / 10U Coach Training:
Candidates must complete their age-specific Coach training at an in-person training course taught by an AYSO-certified Coach Instructor. Coaches at these levels must complete BOTH a classroom-based training course AND a corresponding Field Session.

12U / Intermediate (I) / Advanced (A) Coach Training:
Candidates must complete all coach training requirements including the prerequisite courses listed below.

12U Coach training is available through Region 254, but Intermediate Coach and Advanced Coach training are not. Those courses are offered by Area 10V and Section 10, respectively, and must be taught by an Advanced Coach Instructor. All three of these courses have a pre-course requirement and materials for I and A courses are due to the instructor at least two (2) weeks before the course is taken. No coach can obtain more than one (1) of these three certifications (12U/I/A) within a single year.

Here is a walkthrough of each step of the process:

Submit a Volunteer Form

Your first step is to fill out a volunteer form. This step takes just a few minutes

Volunteer Safety Courses: How to Find and Signup

Your next step is to make sure all your safety courses are done. There are just a few of them and can all be done online.

Coach Training: How to Find and Signup

You must take the coach training course for the age of your team. So if you are coaching U8, then you will take the 8U Coaching course.

And here are the instructions written out:

Safe Sport Requirement

In 2021, the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017 (“SafeSport Act”) expanded its categories of Mandated Reporters to include adults authorized to interact with children. As a result of this expansion, the SafeSport Act now covers AYSO and requires training on child abuse and mandated reporting.

As of January 1, 2022, U.S. Soccer will no longer allow equivalent training and has mandated the use of SafeSport. AYSO will comply with the federal SafeSport training requirement and integrate its training with the U.S. Soccer Education and Learning Center as well as its Player Health and Safety Courses. Therefore, all volunteers will need to take the full SafeSport training course in the first year. This course is approximately 90 minutes long and must be repeated every three years. In-between these 3-year intervals, volunteers must take annual updates which are approximately 30 minutes long.

You can access the SafeSport training by following these instructions:
1. Login to your Sports Connect account where you registered as a volunteer (the ayso254.org site)
and enter your Account page (upper right-hand corner of the page);
2. Click on the Volunteer tab on the left-hand side of the page;
3. Click on the SafeSport box on your list of training and certification courses;
4. Click on the Renew and Update button on the bottom of the list.
5. A screen will pop up where you will click on the “click HERE” link or copy and paste the URL into
your browser to begin training (see picture below);
6. Register on the U.S. Center for SafeSport website;
7. Select the "SafeSport Trained - U.S. Soccer Federation" course from the My Courses screen and follow the directions.

Live Scan Requirement

As of January 1, 2022, all youth sports volunteers are required by California law to complete a LiveScan criminal background check as part of their safety certifications. LiveScan is an electronic fingerprinting technology used in California for various background check purposes. Region 254 and Area 10V plan to host local LiveScan event locally for its volunteers at a date TBA. Regardless of whether you have had a previous LiveScan performed as part of your job or other volunteer service, you will need to submit to a new LiveScan for AYSO. LiveScan results are not shareable between government agencies and/or private organizations – so you need a separate scan for each agency or organization you work and/or volunteer for. Fortunately, this is a one-time requirement that does not (currently) have to be repeated.

If you cannot make it to the region’s LiveScan event, you may complete one of the other options described here: Online Fingerprinting Services for Background Checks. An FBI Channeler with Nationwide Live Scan Locations Near You! (applicantservices.com)

Here is the LiveScan form you must bring to your appointment:

Non-AYSO Training and Licensing

Training or licenses from other soccer organizations outside AYSO (such as a USSF license) are NOT recognized by AYSO. Recipients of non-AYSO licenses or training must receive approval through the AYSO Cross-Certification program BEFORE they may participate as a coach in AYSO programs. Information about training equivalency can be found here: AYSO/USSF Coach Cross-Certification – AYSO Volunteer Resources. This is a national AYSO requirement. Region 254 cannot grant exemptions, or waivers, of this requirement.
