Burbank AYSO Region 254

REGION 254 REFEREE TRAINING

If your child has played soccer before, you probably realize how important Referee's are to what we do. Every game needs three trained ref's. Multiply that by the 30 games we have each weekend and you can see how many people we need to function.

This is why every team from U10 and up needs at least two trained referees in addition to the coaches.

If you are going to coach, it would be smart to also be able to referee - just in case. Teams can not move into playoffs without enough referee's.

If you can't coach, then you definitely should take the class and help out your team!

Your next step is to make sure all your safety courses are done. There are just a few of them and can all be done online.

Referee Training: How to Find and Signup

There are two types of referee courses. The first is the Regional Referee Course and the second one is the combined Online and In-person course. The combined online course will be about 90 minutes online followed by about 3.5 hrs in person, while the normal Regional Course will be about 6 hrs in person.

Live Scan Requirement

As of January 1, 2022, all youth sports volunteers are required by California law to complete a LiveScan criminal background check as part of their safety certifications. LiveScan is an electronic fingerprinting technology used in California for various background check purposes. Region 254 and Area 10V plan to host local LiveScan event locally for its volunteers at a date TBA. Regardless of whether you have had a previous LiveScan performed as part of your job or other volunteer service, you will need to submit to a new LiveScan for AYSO. LiveScan results are not shareable between government agencies and/or private organizations – so you need a separate scan for each agency or organization you work and/or volunteer for. Fortunately, this is a one-time requirement that does not (currently) have to be repeated.

If you cannot make it to the region’s LiveScan event, you may complete one of the other options described here: Online Fingerprinting Services for Background Checks. An FBI Channeler with Nationwide Live Scan Locations Near You! (applicantservices.com)

Here is the LiveScan form you must bring to your appointment:

About the Regional Referee Position and Course

Regional Referee is the initial level of training required for all Referees in our region. Regional Referees manage soccer matches played between teams of youth players in the age groups from 10U to 12U.

Referees are as critical to soccer as players and coaches. In AYSO, the game can’t be played if there aren’t enough referees.  AYSO’s referee training is considered some of the best in the U.S. and includes both in-person courses in your community and online opportunities. Soccer knowledge is a plus, but is certainly not required. The AYSO referee training will give you all you need to know to have a terrific experience on the field.

No advance preparation is required and all course materials will be provided on the day of the class.

There is no out-of-pocket cost in becoming a referee. We only ask that you invest your time to help promote a FUN, FAIR and SAFE environment for our kids.

Once you have completed the Basic Referee class, let us know and you will be provided the game schedule and a complete uniform and accessory kit needed in order to get you off to the right start in your first match.

Frequently Asked Questions

I barely know the rules, and you are going to throw me out there on my own?!?

No, you will take this class and then be paired up with another experienced referee until you feel comfortable. After a few games, you will start to feel more comfortable. You will not be refereeing in the center of the field until you are ready.

I don't want to be yelled at. Well, I like to yell at the referee's but I don't want them to yell at me.

Referee's make mistakes.  But the more that everyone learns the rules, the less animosity will be generated. And if you didn't like your referee's last year, then you surely should get trained yourself!

Do I have to buy those awesome Referee jersey's?

No, we will order you a free yellow jersey after you successfully complete the course.
